Jennifer and Marty are the founders and owners of Paper Street Books and Comics. They got their start in March 2016 under the name Sci-Squad, a box primarily focused on sci-fi and fantasy graphic novels, and then rebranded to “Paper Street Books and Comics” to offer more genres and books to the mix.
“Paper Street Books and Comics is not your mother’s book club,” they say. “We combine reading with art and fandom, bringing all things nerdom together. A subscriber chooses between a graphic novel, book, or both, and every 2 months we select some unique and quirky reads along with goodies that match the theme.”
How do you pick your products?
While we enjoy all types of comics ranging from mainstream to indie, we like to feature novels outside of the household name publishers. We will always choose a novel that is a standalone read or a new story arc so that you’re not in the middle of a series.
By featuring these stories, this will encourage readers to discover a new favorite. We also like to include creative items from small business owners and artists that we love to support.
What do your customers love about your box?
We have people from many different walks of life who subscribe to our box, so the reasons they love it are varied! Some may love how we bring reading and fandom together, or some may love how different our books are compared to other subscriptions.
We are not afraid to push our boundaries when it comes to our graphic novel selections. Besides, how many boxes have you seen that feature Sex Criminals?
What’s your favorite thing about the comics and graphic novel fan community?
We love how passionate they are! This applies to all types of fandom, but many people don’t understand why you “nerd” out so much on something, but you do.
You nerd out because that superhero saved your life from a dark place that you were once in, or you were a shy girl who built confidence over time because you were able to share your love for anime with others. To us, these comics, anime, and movies saved us, and we are who we are because of it.
